Jerusalem – The Holiest Of All The Cities

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

One of the most contested cities is Jerusalem. It is thought to be the mecca of three different religions Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Each religion holds significance for another reason. For Christianity, it is the location where Jesus spent his last days. For Islam, it is where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. It is said that Mohammed was carried from Mecca to Jerusalem and then from Jerusalem into the heavens. For Judaism, two temples were built and then destroyed. It is said that when the Messiah returns, the temples will be rebuilt. Taking a pilgrimage in Jerusalem looks different for all of the religions, but these are the top destination depending on which religion you are looking to discover

Christianity

Mount of Olives holds major significance for the final hours before Jesus' death. It is said that he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. This beautiful olive grove overlooks several other major sites. Via Dolorosa is between the Mount of Olives and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This is another must visit for those learning more about the history of Christianity. This is the route that Jesus was taken on his way to the crucifixion site. You can follow this winding path through the city. The one main difference between now and then is that stairs were built in the 8th century. The route would have ended at Golgotha or what is now known as the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. This crucification site honors the event with icons and picturesque architecture.

Islam

Temple Mount is one of the most critical locations for Judaism and Islam. Though there is significant influence from Judaism, the site is now under Islam regulation. Be sure to bring your passport, and leave behind any religious artifacts. Within the Temple Mount, the Dome of the Rock is the location where Mohammed ascended to heaven. While anyone can visit the Temple Mount, only Muslims can enter the Dome of the Rock. The final stop for those exploring the Islam faith is Mount Zion. One of the best stops is the Dajani Cemeteries. These cemeteries are said to have long ties to the Prophet himself. It is the burial ground of several academic, religious and political leaders.

Judaism

The Western Wall is considered one of the Jewish faith's most important religious sites. People can visit and recite prayers or place written prayers between the cracks. This wall is significant because during the six-day Roman War, the Israelis prayed at the wall, and it was the only part of the temple that was left untouched. When visiting the way, it is essential to dress modestly with females' heads and legs covered and men's heads covered. Another important site to visit on a Judaism tour is the Tower of David. Bridging the east and west cities, the Tower of David is home to many historical artifacts dating from Biblical times until modern-day events. This is a can't miss stop when discovering more about Jerusalem.

While I touched on these for each religion, there is a lot of overlap between these historic sites. Exploring how each religion ties into one another is a great way to learn about the religions and the city. Plan your perfect trip to explore all of the religions of this holy city.
