Bosnia and Herzegovina is a land where East meets West, but nowhere is this cultural crossroads more striking than in Mostar. With its iconic bridge spanning the Neretva River and its dramatic landscapes just beyond the city, Mostar is a destination that whispers stories of resilience, beauty, and timeless traditions.

The Legacy of Stari Most

Mostar takes its name from the “mostari”—the bridge keepers who once guarded Stari Most. Built in 1566 by the Ottomans, this elegant stone bridge stood for over 400 years before being destroyed during the war in the 1990s. Its reconstruction in 2004 was more than architectural—it symbolized reconciliation and unity. Today, standing on the arch and looking down at the turquoise river, you can almost feel the weight of history beneath your feet.

Layers of Cultural Heritage

Wandering the old town feels like walking through centuries. The cobblestone Kujundžiluk Bazaar still follows its Ottoman-era layout. At the same time, the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque offers a place of worship and breathtaking views from its slender minaret. Tucked-away corners reveal Ottoman houses with their intimate courtyards, reminders of a way of life shaped by both East and West.

But Mostar’s story isn’t only Ottoman. You’ll also find Austro-Hungarian influences in the city’s 19th-century architecture, giving Mostar a rare, layered charm where empires and cultures overlap in every street.

Below the monastery, a small waterfall cascades into a turquoise river that flows out from a cave at the base of the cliff.

A City Shaped by the River

The Neretva River is Mostar’s lifeline. Its emerald waters divide the city and have shaped its history and traditions. For centuries, young men have leapt from Stari Most into its icy depths, a daring ritual of bravery that continues today. The river also leads you beyond the city, winding through canyons and valleys that beg to be explored.

Blagaj Tekke – The Dervish Monastery at the Water’s Edge

Just a short trip from Mostar lies one of Herzegovina’s most serene sites—the Blagaj Tekke. Nestled at the base of towering cliffs, this 16th-century Dervish monastery rests at the source of the Buna River, where water gushes from the rock face in a powerful spring. The combination of spirituality, history, and natural beauty makes it one of the region’s most unforgettable places.

A large, calm pool of green water is in the foreground, with a few people swimming in it. The sky is bright blue with large, fluffy white clouds.

Kravice Waterfalls – Bosnia’s Natural Jewel

About 40 kilometers from Mostar, the Kravice Waterfalls spill dramatically into a wide emerald pool, creating a natural amphitheater of cascading water. In summer, locals gather here to swim, picnic, and relax, while spring and autumn bring quieter days where you can listen to nothing but the roar of the falls and the birds in the trees.

A Walk Through Time

Perhaps the best way to experience Mostar is on foot—crossing bridges, climbing minarets, and pausing to let the city’s stories reveal themselves. Every stone carries history, from medieval Ottoman builders to the scars of recent conflicts. Yet today, Mostar stands renewed, a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit of its people.

On the left bank of the river, the historic Old City features stone houses with tiled roofs, surrounded by green trees. On the right bank, a mosque with a tall, slender minaret stands out against the backdrop of a mountain range. The sky is a vibrant blue with sparse clouds. The morning sun casts a warm, golden light over the scene.
