Getting lost in many cases is not a good thing; however, when it comes to discovering new places, getting lost and getting off-the-beaten-path allows for some of the most incredible experiences. My favorite experience that I have had getting lost was in Paris, looking for the metro station. I’d been traveling all day and just arrived in Paris by train. In an attempt to find the metro station to visit the Arc du Triumph, I walked for 2 hours and stumbled across my favorite bakery, the cutest art gallery, and some of the best coffee I’ve ever tasted.

When you travel off-the-beaten-path, it often gives you a taste of the local culture. The local culture is usually very different from the part typical tourists see. You’ll be able to connect with locals, and often people will invite you into their homes for a truly unique experience that is off the beaten path.

As you venture further off-the-beaten-path, you’ll gain an understanding that not many people get to have. You’ll understand what has shaped the culture, history, and cuisine by venturing into the unknown. This is most evident when a culture goes through a trying time, which shapes it the most. For example, one of the most popular dishes in Ukraine is Borsch, which became popular during the Soviet regime when food was scarce, and garden vegetables were plentiful. The story behind this meal and others is what you can gain by venturing off the beaten path.

The more you wander, the more you will find unique experiences. If you explore the state of South Australia, you’ll find Adelaide’s Central Market, where you can uncover Something Wild. Something Wild will help you explore the Aborigine culture of Australia. You can purchase kangaroo, emu, and even green ants. The recipes sold here are old meet new in their style and ingredients.

My ultimate favorite thing about traveling off-the-beaten-path is that you’ll learn more about yourself and the places you visit. I’ve always believed that the more I explore, the more it opens up an understanding of other cultures. Are you ready to venture off the beaten path?
