Tel Aviv hums with an energy all its own. As one of Israel's great economic centers, it stands in striking contrast to the ancient stillness of Jerusalem. Here you'll find a thriving, multicultural metropolis that never seems to sleep, where beach cafés, bold architecture, and lively markets spill into one another from morning until well past midnight.

Yet tucked between the famous sights are quieter wonders, the kind you only find when you wander with curious eyes. This week, we're stepping off the main path to discover the unusual and the undiscovered side of Tel Aviv.

Ran Morin's "Suspending Orange Tree" artwork hanging in an egg-shaped seed vessel between stone buildings and under an archway in Old Jaffa.

The Suspended Orange Tree

Picture yourself strolling the winding stone lanes of Old Jaffa, the ancient port that sits at Tel Aviv's southern edge. Turn a corner, and there it is: a living orange tree, floating just above the ground.

This enchanting sight is the work of Israeli artist Ran Morin, who created it in 1993. The tree grows from a large earthenware vessel suspended by chains from the walls of the surrounding houses, its roots fully enclosed within. A hidden drip system keeps it watered, and it still bears real fruit.

Morin intended the piece as a reflection on our relationship with nature and the feeling of being uprooted. It also nods to the famous Jaffa orange, once shipped around the world from this very port.

Travel tips

  • The tree sits on a public lane, so it's free to visit any time of day

  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the surrounding streets include steep paths and stone steps

  • Linger afterward to browse the nearby galleries and artist studios that line these lanes

The Hundertwasser Drinking Fountain

Feeling thirsty on your walk? You may stumble across one of the most whimsical drinking fountains in the world, though you won't find a drop of water in it today.

This fountain was designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Austrian artist and architect famous for rejecting straight lines and celebrating swirling spirals and organic forms. Completed in 1996, it's part of his Spiral River series, and its playful shape is instantly recognizable once you know his style.

The years have left their mark, and the fountain no longer flows, but it remains a delightful discovery for art lovers and anyone who appreciates beauty in unexpected places.

Travel tips

  • Bring your camera, as the fountain's colors and curves are wonderfully photogenic

  • Pair your visit with a self-guided art walk through the city

The Ilana Goor Museum

One of Tel Aviv's most captivating treasures is a museum shaped entirely by one woman's vision. Ilana Goor is a self-taught Israeli artist and lifelong collector, and her museum in Old Jaffa feels like stepping inside a beautifully curated cabinet of curiosities.

The building itself tells a remarkable story. Built in 1742 as an inn for Jewish pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem, it later became a soap and perfume factory and, for a time, a synagogue. Ilana and her husband purchased the neglected building in the 1980s, lovingly restored it, and opened the museum in 1995. They still live in a private apartment above the galleries.

Inside, you'll find an eclectic mix of Goor's own work alongside pieces she has gathered from around the globe. The collection spans from Roman times to the present day, and new pieces continue to join it.

Save time for the rooftop sculpture garden. From here, the views stretch across Old Jaffa to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, a moment made for slowing down and soaking it all in.

Travel tips

  • Look for the entrances on Mazal Dagim Street or through the gift shop on Louis Pasteur Street

  • Check current hours and admission before you go

  • Visit in the late afternoon for golden light over the sea from the rooftop
