Sri Lanka’s earliest inhabitants date back more than 2 million years during the hunter-gatherer era. Fast forward to the 5th century BCE, and we see the first significant wave of immigration from northern India. This group formed the modern Sinhalese population. Two centuries later, arrivals from southern India arrived, settling in Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka, and forming the Tamil population. There were several distinctions between the two groups.
