Tucked among the mountains of northern Slovakia, Martin and Žilina are treasures waiting to be discovered. Here, green pastures roll toward craggy peaks, castles keep watch over winding rivers, and village traditions are still lovingly kept alive.

This week, we're continuing our Slovak adventure with a journey through these two enchanting towns and the storybook countryside that surrounds them.

Martin: A Cultural Beacon Amid Nature's Splendor

Martin is often called the cultural heart of the Slovak nation. It was a center of the Slovak National Revival and is home to Matica slovenská, the historic institution devoted to Slovak language and culture. Surrounded by the peaks of the Malá Fatra mountains, it pairs deep history with breathtaking scenery.

The town's flagship Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest and largest branches of the Slovak National Museum. Its collections of folk costumes, crafts, and everyday objects offer a vivid portrait of Slovak traditions and identity.

Museum of the Slovak Village

On the edge of town, this open-air museum is pure magic. Wander among traditional wooden homes, farm buildings, and a village church gathered from across northern Slovakia. It feels like stepping into a 19th century village, with costumed events bringing it to life throughout the year.

Slovak National Cemetery

In the center of Martin, this quiet, tree-shaded cemetery is the resting place of many of Slovakia's most beloved writers and national figures. It's a peaceful, moving stop for anyone curious about the people who shaped the nation.

Malá Fatra National Park

Beyond the museums, the real exhibit begins outdoors. Malá Fatra National Park offers dramatic ridges, forested valleys, and wildflower meadows. Choose a gentle walk and a picnic, or take on a ridge hike for sweeping mountain views.

Žilina: Where History Meets Modern Charm

Just northwest of Martin, Žilina balances centuries of history with a lively, modern spirit. Its compact old town is made for wandering, with cafés and shops tucked into historic buildings.

Mariánske Square

The heart of Žilina is Mariánske námestie, a graceful square lined with arcaded, colorful buildings. At its center stands a Marian column, and the twin towers of the Baroque Church of St. Paul the Apostle rise above it all. Settle into a café here for the perfect people watching break.

Burian Tower

On neighboring Hlinka Square, the Burian Tower is one of the oldest Renaissance bell towers in Slovakia. Climb to the top for lovely views over the rooftops and surrounding mountains.

Budatín Castle

Where the Váh and Kysuca rivers meet, Budatín Castle stands with its white façade and round tower. Dating to the 13th century, it now houses the Považie Museum, home to a dazzling exhibition of wire tinkering, a uniquely Slovak folk craft that turns simple wire into animals, figures, and fantastical creatures. Afterward, stroll through the leafy castle park down to the rivers' edge.

Discovering Hidden Gems

Beyond the main sights, a patchwork of villages and pastures awaits, where life moves at a gentler pace. Wooden churches and castle ruins dot the countryside, each with its own story to tell.

Strečno Castle

Between Martin and Žilina, Strečno Castle sits dramatically on a cliff above the Váh River. It's one of the most photogenic stops in the region and an easy add on to a day of exploring.

Terchová

Nestled at the edge of Malá Fatra, Terchová is famous as the birthplace of Juraj Jánošík, Slovakia's legendary Robin Hood. Each summer, the Jánošík Days Folklore Festival fills the village with traditional music, dance, and craftsmanship, drawing visitors from around the world. Nearby, the beautiful Vrátna Valley is a gateway to some of the park's best hikes.
