Bolivia offers some of South America's most striking landscapes, the otherworldly salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, La Paz's dramatic high-altitude setting, and Lake Titicaca's deep cultural history. The dry season (May-October) brings the clearest conditions for the salt flats, while the wet season (roughly December-April) creates the famous mirror effect at Uyuni when a thin layer of water reflects the sky perfectly. A 7-10 day trip allows La Paz plus Uyuni, with Lake Titicaca as a worthwhile addition. Because Bolivia's high altitude affects nearly every part of the trip, an advisor's guidance on acclimation and realistic pacing is especially important here.

Local Etiquette & Cultural Tips

Bolivian culture blends Indigenous Andean traditions (Quechua and Aymara) with Spanish colonial influence.

  • Friendly greetings: A handshake is standard, cheek kisses common between women and mixed pairs who are acquainted.

  • Dress respectfully: Warm layers are essential given the altitude, modest dress appreciated at religious and Indigenous cultural sites.

  • Dining times: Lunch is often the largest meal, dinner from 7:30-8:00pm onward.

  • Local customs: Coca tea is commonly offered to help with altitude adjustment, a genuine local remedy worth accepting.

  • Transportation and timing: Domestic flights save significant time given Bolivia's mountainous terrain and long overland distances.

  • Practical tip: La Paz sits above 11,000 feet, plan a day or two to acclimate before strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water.

Souvenirs

  • For the Foodies: Bolivian coffee or coca leaf products (legal and common locally).

  • For the Fashionistas: A handwoven alpaca wool scarf or poncho from a local artisan market.

  • For the Home: A piece of hand-woven Andean textile art or a small llama figurine.
