Thailand offers one of the best value-for-experience combinations in Southeast Asia, Bangkok's temples and street food, the beaches and islands of the south, and the mountain culture of Chiang Mai in the north. The cool, dry season (November-February) is the most comfortable time to visit most of the country. A 10-12 day trip allows Bangkok plus a beach or northern extension. Dress respectfully: Modest dress (covered shoulders and knees) is required at temples, sandals should be removed before entering.
Dining times: Meals happen throughout the day, street food culture means eating is often less scheduled than in the West.
Local customs: The head is considered sacred and the feet the lowest part of the body, avoid touching anyone's head and don't point your feet at people or Buddha images.
Transportation and timing: Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and river boats help avoid notorious traffic, domestic flights connect the north and the islands.
Practical tip: Never speak disrespectfully about the Thai royal family, this is taken very seriously and is in fact against the law.
