Bali offers rice terraces, temples, and a laid-back beach and wellness culture that has made it Indonesia's signature destination for travelers, with enough distinct sub-regions (Ubud's culture, the southern beaches, a volcano sunrise hike) to fill a full trip on its own. The dry season (April-October) brings the most comfortable weather. A 7-10 day trip covers Bali's varied regions at a comfortable pace, and it can be extended with a side trip to nearby islands like Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands for those with extra time. Because Bali has such distinct sub-regions, an advisor's guidance on which areas to base in (and for how long) shapes the trip considerably.

Local Etiquette & Cultural Tips

Balinese Hindu culture (distinct from the rest of Muslim-majority Indonesia) shapes daily life with visible ceremony and ritual.

  • Friendly greetings: A warm smile and slight nod, handshakes are also common and welcomed.

  • Dress respectfully: A sarong and sash are required to enter temples, most temples provide or rent these at the entrance.

  • Dining times: Meals happen throughout the day, less rigidly scheduled than in the West.

  • Local customs: Small offerings (canang sari) are placed outside homes and businesses daily, be mindful not to step on them.

  • Transportation and timing: Traffic, especially in southern Bali, can be heavy, private drivers are the most practical way to get around.

  • Practical tip: Use only bottled or filtered water, including for brushing teeth, throughout the island.

Souvenirs

  • For the Foodies: Balinese coffee, including the well-known kopi luwak, or local spices.

  • For the Fashionistas: Handwoven ikat textiles or silver jewelry from Ubud's craft villages.
